Sheltowee Extreme 6
12-hour Adventure Race | 7.26.14

Thanks to everyone who came out to race and volunteer
for the SXT 6.  We had a great time and look forward to
seeing you back at Laurel River Lake in 2015!  Results.

Return to Laurel River Lake

The SXT 6 will feature 12 hours of mountain biking, paddling, trekking, swimming (with PFD), and navigation through outstanding AR territory - Laurel River Lake Recreation Area, London, Kentucky.  The area combines some of the best features of Cave Run Lake and the Red River Gorge, with great paddling, sweet mountain biking trails and beautiful clifflines with rock shelters, waterfalls and more!  Here's a link to the US Forest Service website and a link to the Corps of Engineers website, both full of interesting and helpful information.

The course design will be flexible, to allow participants to tailor the race to their abilities. Solid navigation skills will be needed to complete the course, however.  This race is not recommended for beginners.  If you're new to adventure racing, please consider the Unbridled AR Series, or volunteering!

The race is open to soloists and teams of 2, 3 and 4 (male, female and co-ed).  The entry fee is $125 and includes waterproof maps, wicking race shirt, post-race meal, USARA sanctioning and Regional Qualifier sponsorship, course vetting, door prizes, and more!

If you are not a USARA member, you will need to purchase a 1-day membership for $8 or a 1-year membership for $35.  If you are a USARA member, you must present a current USARA card at check-in.  If you do not have your current USARA card, you will be required to purchase a 1-day membership and will be reimbursed $5 of the fee by USARA.

Registration is now closed.

Boat rental:

We have a limited number of canoes and kayaks available to rent.  Canoes are $40 per boat and are available with 2 or 3 seats.  Kayaks are $35 per boat and will hold only one paddler (no tandems).  Please indicate boat rental on your registration form and pay for your boat with your entry fee.

Rental canoes come with canoe paddles and PFDs. Rental kayaks come with kayaks paddles and PFDs. You are welcome to use your own PFD or paddle and will not have to carry them if you do. You will be given an opportunity to stage paddling gear prior to the race start.

Awards will be given to the top teams in the following divisions:

The SXT 6 is a Regional Qualifier for the USARA Adventure Race National Championship at fantastic Wisp Resort in McHenry, Maryland

October 2014

Baymont Inn & Suites in Corbin, Kentucky, will serve as the host hotel for the SXT 6.  This modern and attractive hotel rates a 4 out of 5 with 113 reviews on Trip Advisor.  Free wi-fi and continental breakfast, of course, but how about a pool and hot tub inside a sunny solarium?   The hotel is 14 miles (25 minutes) from the start/finish area.  Baymont is offering a 20% discount to racers.  Call the hotel directly (606-523-9040) and mention "Sheltowee Adventure Race."  A standard room for 2 adults would be $71.96.  There are several room and suite options from which to choose, however.  There will be optional early race check-in at the hotel on Friday evening.  Click on the image below for additional information about the host hotel.

This year we will also have an option for tent camping, as the race will start and finish at the Craig's Creek Group Use Area.  We have reserved two of the three group campsites for Friday night and one for Saturday night, which should accommodate everyone who prefers to camp.  The group camp has flush toilets and showers, tent pads, picnic tables, grills, and drinking water.  There is no electricity (according to the website - I'm pretty sure I saw a couple of electrical boxes, but I wouldn't count on power, anyway).  The site is developed for tents only; no RVs, please.

Tent camping will be $10 per site per night.  You MUST reserve a site in advance.  You will be given an assigned site.  You MUST check in at the host hotel prior to proceeding to the campground, so you can pay for your site and receive your site assignment.  DO NOT go straight to the campground, unless you have made prior arrangements with the Race Director.  Quiet time at the group camp area will begin at 11 p.m.  If you will not arrive before 11 p.m., please make alternate arrangements for lodging, to avoid disturbing other campers' sleep.
