Unbridled Adventure Race Series
in Kentucky State Parks

Trailer for the Ceraphim Productions video of the 2013 Red River Gorge American Classic, a/k/a the Fig XI:

Unbridled Adventure is a series of three adventure races organized by Flying Squirrel Adventures, in partnership with Kentucky State Parks. The races will grow longer and more difficult, in terms of both physical and mental challenge, as the season progresses.  Each course will be designed to ensure most beginners are able to complete the race within the allotted time, while veteran racers can challenge themselves by going after more difficult bonus checkpoints.  The exception to this rule is the last race in the series, The Fig, which is not recommended for inexperienced racers.  There will be a free navigation clinic on Friday night before the first two races in the series.  There will be an awards banquet Saturday night after each race.   Top finishers in the series will be awarded cash prizes!

Each race will include mountain biking, trekking on and off trail, paddling on flat or slow-moving water, and navigation with topo map and compass. A given race may also include a short PFD-assisted swim or other AR-discipline for which no special expertise is required. Your entry for each race includes a wicking race shirt, post-race meal, quality waterproof maps, event insurance with medical coverage, on-site medical staff, course vetting, Tyvek control cards and race bibs, door prizes, and awards.  Boats are available to rent, but please register early to ensure availability.  All racers and volunteers in 2014 will receive a 4" full-color Flying Squirrel Adventures sticker (one per person per season, while supplies last).

Please take note of registration deadlines, as extensions cannot be granted, due to deadlines for ordering shirts, maps, meals, and the like.  Registration closes two weeks before each race, without exception.

All races are open to soloists and teams of 2, 3 or 4. All races are USARA-sanctioned and qualify for points in the USARA national standings. Additionally, Unbridled Adventure is a series that qualifies for additional points under the new USARA points guidelines!

SERIES REGISTRATION

In order to compete in the series, you must register your team and designate your series division and team captain.  You do not have to register for the series to compete in an individual race.  Registering for the series does not register you for any race.  To be ranked in the series, teams must compete in at least two of the three races.  Teams will receive bonus points for competing in all three races.  A team will be considered to have competed in a race, for purposes of the award of bonus points, by volunteering for the event.  There is no additional fee for registration in the series.

You must race within the division in which you are registered for the series and under the same team name in order for points earned in a given race to count toward your series standings.  Points will be awarded to the top five finishers in each division and to the top five finishers in the race overall.  Top five division finishers in the series will receive Flying Squirrel Adventures merchandise.  Top five overall finishers in the series will share a cash purse of $1,000, divided as follows:  $500 - 1st place solo or team; $250 - 2nd place solo or team; $120 - 3rd place solo or team; $80 - 4th place solo or team; $50 - 5th place solo or team.

 Lake Barkley State Resort Park 6-hour Adventure Race

June 7, 2014 | 10 am - 4 pm | $75 (registration closed May 24, 2014)

Thanks to everyone who came out and enjoyed a beautiful day of racing at Lake Barkley State Resort Park, and to all of the volunteers and staff who supported this first race in our Unbridled Adventure Race Series in Kentucky State Parks.  We had 98 racers toe the starting line, and a great turnout for the pre and post-race festivities, too.  We're really pleased to see this series grow and to see folks bringing friends and family along to cheer them on.  This was a very spectator-friendly event, as racers came in and out of the same lakeside TA all day long, giving fans plenty of opportunity to cheer their favorite teams in transition.  Rage Against the Cutoff - soloist Drake White - cleared the course with about half an hour to spare, and most of our newbie teams were able to clear the mandatory points and make it back just before the storm rolled in.

 Pine Mountain State Resort Park 8-hour Adventure Race
August 16, 2014 | 10 am - 6 pm | $75 (registration closes August 2, 2014
)

We had another gorgeous day for the second race in the Unbridled AR Series in Kentucky State Parks.  After some last minute cancellations, we had 100 racers toe the starting line, and all but 1 came in as official finishers.  The steep terrain took its toll on racers' legs, and we heard many reports of cramping as racers crawled out of the lake after stand-up paddleboarding, canoeing/kayaking, and swimming.  Still, the cool water of the lake was a welcome refreshment in the middle of the day.  A few racers who didn't make it out on the last trekking leg enjoyed a short hike out to Chained Rock the next day, before packing up and heading home.  We had just one team come in 5 minutes late, and everyone was otherwise off the course in time to enjoy a great awards banquet.  The hospitality and the food at Pine Mountain were terrific all weekend.  Park Naturalist Beth Byrnes led us on a really fun and engaging hike along the Hemlock Garden Trail behind the lodge Friday evening.  All in all, it was an outstanding weekend.  Congratulations to overall winners Only MOSTLY Lost (Jason Schaefer, Laura Comtois and Gary Dunham), followed closely by brother-sister duo The Dallmanators (Morgan and Sara Dallman), and then Rage Against the Cut-off (Drake White).  Congratulations to all the new folks who came out and performed so well on this steep, challenging course!

New discipline - new logo!

Flying Squirrel Adventures has unveiled a new discipline for the Fig XII - the Grand Finale!  Racers will get to experience the awesome scenery and adrenaline rush of ziplining with Red River Gorge Zipline Tours at Cliffview Resort.  This will be the last year for Flying Squirrel Adventures to produce the Fig, and we wanted to leave on a high note (so to speak).  In order to ensure a quality event and maintain a manageable flow through the zipline challenge, we're limiting the field this year to 150 racers.  So, whether the Fig is still on your bucket list or is a regular entry on your fall racing calendar, get your registration in today!  We're committed to the 150-racer limit and out of fairness to those folks, we won't make any exceptions.  Be sure you get your lodging reservations made early, too, if you plan to stay with us at the state park.  We expect to be fully booked there, too.  Train well, and we'll see you the first Saturday of November!
