Unbridled Adventure is a series of three adventure races organized by Flying Squirrel Adventures, in partnership with Kentucky State Parks. The races will grow longer and more difficult, in terms of both physical and mental challenge, as the season progresses.  Each course will be designed to ensure most beginners are able to complete the race within the allotted time, while veteran racers can challenge themselves by going after more difficult bonus checkpoints.  The exception to this rule is the last race in the series, The Fig, which is not recommended for inexperienced racers.  There will be a free navigation clinic on Friday night before the first two races in the series.  There will be an awards banquet Saturday night after each race.   Top finishers in the series will be awarded cash prizes!

Each race will include mountain biking on trail and road, trekking on and off trail, paddling on flat or slow-moving water, and navigation with topo map and compass. A given race may also include a short PFD-assisted swim or other AR-discipline for which no special expertise is required. Your entry for each race includes a wicking race shirt, post-race meal, quality waterproof maps, event insurance with medical coverage, course vetting, Tyvek control cards and race bibs, door prizes, and awards.  Boats are available to rent, but please register early to ensure availability.

Please take note of registration deadlines, as extensions cannot be granted, due to deadlines for ordering shirts, maps, meals, and the like. Registration closes two weeks before each race, without exception.

All races are open to soloists and teams of 2, 3 or 4. All races are USARA-sanctioned and qualify for points in the USARA national standings. Additionally, Unbridled Adventure is a series that qualifies for additional points under the new USARA points guidelines! The Fig XI is a Regional Qualifier for the 2014 USARA Adventure Race National Championship.  If you are not a current USARA member on race day, you will need to purchase either a one-day membership ($8) or annual membership ($35). For more information about USARA and what membership and sanctioning mean, visit their website

To be ranked in the series, teams must compete in at least two of the three races.  Teams will receive bonus points for competing in all three races.  A team will be considered to have competed in a race, for purposes of the award of bonus points, by volunteering for the event.  There is no additional fee for registration in the series.  You must race within the division in which you are registered for the series and under the same team name in order for points earned in a given race to count toward your series standings.

5% of female entry fees will be donated to the Athena Project Foundation, an organization founded by veteran adventure racer Robyn Benincasa to help survivors live their adventurous dreams. In 2012, Flying Squirrel Adventures donated $371.75 of entry fees to Project Athena.
