|Unbridled Adventure is a series of three adventure races organized by Flying Squirrel Adventures, in partnership with Kentucky State Parks. The races will grow longer and more difficult, in terms of both physical and mental challenge, as the season progresses. Each course will be designed to ensure most beginners are able to complete the race within the allotted time, while veteran racers can challenge themselves by going after more difficult bonus checkpoints. The exception to this rule is the last race in the series, The Fig, which is not recommended for inexperienced racers. There will be a free navigation clinic on Friday night before the first two races in the series. There will be an awards banquet Saturday night after each race. Top finishers in the series will be awarded cash prizes!
Each race will include mountain biking, trekking on and off trail, paddling on flat or slow-moving water, and navigation with topo map and compass. A given race may also include a short PFD-assisted swim or other AR-discipline for which no special expertise is required. Your entry for each race includes a wicking race shirt, post-race meal, quality waterproof maps, event insurance with medical coverage, on-site medical staff, course vetting, Tyvek control cards and race bibs, door prizes, and awards. Boats are available to rent, but please register early to ensure availability. All racers and volunteers in 2014 will receive a 4" full-color Flying Squirrel Adventures sticker (one per person per season, while supplies last).
Please take note of registration deadlines, as extensions cannot be granted, due to deadlines for ordering shirts, maps, meals, and the like. Registration closes two weeks before each race, without exception.
All races are open to soloists and teams of 2, 3 or 4. All races are USARA-sanctioned and qualify for points in the USARA national standings. Additionally, Unbridled Adventure is a series that qualifies for additional points under the new USARA points guidelines!
SERIES REGISTRATIONIn order to compete in the series, you must register your team and designate your series division and team captain. You do not have to register for the series to compete in an individual race. Registering for the series does not register you for any race. To be ranked in the series, teams must compete in at least two of the three races. Teams will receive bonus points for competing in all three races. A team will be considered to have competed in a race, for purposes of the award of bonus points, by volunteering for the event. There is no additional fee for registration in the series.
You must race within the division in which you are registered for the series and under the same team name in order for points earned in a given race to count toward your series standings. Points will be awarded to the top five finishers in each division and to the top five finishers in the race overall. Top five division finishers in the series will receive Flying Squirrel Adventures merchandise. Top five overall finishers in the series will share a cash purse of $1,000, divided as follows: $500 - 1st place solo or team; $250 - 2nd place solo or team; $120 - 3rd place solo or team; $80 - 4th place solo or team; $50 - 5th place solo or team.
